Cyd from The Sweetest Occasion is a DIY master and in honor of Valentine’s Day, she’s created this step-by-step guide to make the ultimate homemade gift for any champagne lover in your life. Pair these flutes with a bottle of your favorite bubbly for a sweet and thoughtful V-Day surprise.

Blogger Note: Etching cream should always be used in a well ventilated area while wearing protective gloves. Read the manufacturer’s info for your particular etching cream before getting started. Cheers!

Supplies:

  • Glass etching cream
  • Champagne flutes
  • Heart shaped paper punch
  • Plain label/sticker paper
  • Small craft brush
  • Protective gloves
  • Scissors
  • LINDOR Strawberries and Cream Truffles (to add that extra something sweet!)

How-To:

Step 1.

Begin by making sure your champagne flutes are thoroughly cleaned and dried. I washed mine with warm soapy water, then wiped them well again with a dry cloth and glass cleaner to be sure there were no finger prints left behind.

Step 2.

Use your heart shaped paper punch to punch a bunch of heart shapes out of a piece of label paper, to create the stencils you’ll use for etching. In this case we’re using the negative of the heart, not the heart itself, so be sure you don’t punch them too closely together. Then you’ll cut out each heart-shaped negative, leaving a border around the edges.

Step 3.

Pull the backing off one of your heart stencils and position it on your champagne flute. Smooth it onto your glass completely, making sure there are no loose edges or bubbles. Anything the etching cream touches is going to be etched so secure edges are key to a crisp final look. Repeat with as many heart stencils as you’d like to create your desired heart pattern – more or less, it’s up to you!

Step 4.

Next, wearing your gloves, use a brush to apply a generous amount of etching cream to each heart shape, being sure not to let the etching cream touch outside of the stencil. (Refer to the instructions that come with your particular etching cream, but I let the etching cream sit for about ten minutes.) You want to apply a good amount of product, but you don’t want so much that it drips or runs outside of the area to be etched. Anything the cream touches will be permanently altered, so you’ll want to take care to contain it only to the area you want to take on that cloudy, etched appearance.

Step 5.

After ten minutes have passed, put your gloves back on and run your flutes under warm water to remove the stencils and rinse away the etching cream. Clean well and they’re ready for toasting!
