Makes: Two 150 ml cups of hot chocolate

Ingredients

  • 250 ml milk substitute of choice
  • 40-90 g vegan chocolate, broken into pieces
  • vegan chocolate shavings, to finish

Instructions

  • IF USING A MILK FROTHER:
  • Combine the milk substitute and chocolate in the milk frother jug and turn on the medium heat setting.
  • Pause when the milk gets warm and give the mixture a quick stir with a spoon to ensure the chocolate is melting and not sticking to the sides.
  • Continue to froth the mixture until the hot chocolate is smooth, velvety and textured.
  • Pour into warm serving cups and top with chocolate shavings.
  • IF USING A SAUCEPAN:
  • Place the milk substitute into a small saucepan on medium heat and heat up the milk. Do not bring it to a boil.
  • Take off the heat and add in the chocolate pieces.
  • Stir to melt the chocolate and texture the hot chocolate with a milk froth wand or a whisk.
  • Pour into warm serving cups and top with chocolate shavings.
  • IF USING A COFFEE MACHINE STEAM WAND:
  • Combine the milk substitute and chocolate in the jug.
  • Steam and texture the hot chocolate using the coffee machine steam wand until smooth and velvety.
  • Pour into warm serving cups and top with chocolate shavings.
  • This hot chocolate is rich and decadent, lending itself perfectly to a variety of flavors: Mocha: Add two teaspoons of instant coffee to the milk. Extra Chocolate: Add one teaspoon of cocoa powder or a square of Lindt EXCELLENCE 95% Cocoa. Spice: Add a pinch of ground cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, or a teaspoon of vanilla bean paste for a delicious, spiced hot chocolate. Orange: Grate the zest of half an orange into the milk for a zesty, delicious flavor combination. Peanut or Nut butter: For a richer nutty hot chocolate, add a tablespoon of peanut or your favorite nut butter to the milk. Rum: For a grown-up hot chocolate, add two caps of spiced rum to the hot chocolate.
